Scott McTominay still keeps in touch with former Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho.

Mourinho, who gave McTominay his senior debut for United against Arsenal in May 2017, was sacked by the club after a poor run of form in December last year.

But 22-year-old McTominay is now a mainstay in the United midfield and said Mourinho will always have a ‘special place’ in his heart for giving him his break.

“Jose is very special to me,” McTominay told Sky Sports News. “He still keeps in contact with me now and keeps in touch after some games.

“He’ll always have a special place in mine and my family’s heart because he’s the one who brought you in, he was the one who trusted you, he was the one who had belief in you.

“I owe a tremendous amount of credit to him because if it wasn’t for him I might not necessarily be sitting in this seat.”

Mourinho has frequently praised McTominay and hailed his ‘special personality’ after he looked dejected at the club missing out on Champions League football last season.

“He is a special personality and a team in a negative moment needs this kind of mentality that Scott McTominay has.”

When asked if other United players had the same attitude as McTominay, Mourinho replied: “Not all of them.

“But every player is different, every player is a different person. Scott McTominay is a kid with a special character. He is young but he is brave so he is a special kid.”

The Red Devils are just two points above the drop zone after losing three of their opening eight games and host Premier League leaders Liverpool on Sunday.
