“Jesse will be captain,” said manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. “He’s a really good character in this group. He’s had his challenges over the last few months but he’s coming back into his own now.”

Lingard has come under fire for his performances with United having not found the net or recorded an assist since December 2018, while he has also lost his place in the England squad.

Despite his struggles over the past 12 months, Lingard is determined to repay his manager for handing him the armband.

“It’s a massive honour,” he told Manchester United’s website.

“I said at the start of the season I’d like to be more of a leader type of person, on and off the field. You know, being one of the most senior players in the squad.

”Now is the perfect time to show that.“
