Manchester United’s 1999 team were BETTER than Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool, claims former Red Devil Jonathan Greening

Manchester United’s treble-winners from 1999 were a better team than Jurgen Klopp’s current Liverpool side.

That’s according to former midfielder Jonathan Greening, who believes Sir Alex Ferguson’s all-conquering team would win against the high-flying Reds.

Having beaten United 2-0 in their last outing, Liverpool face Wolves in the Premier League on Thursday night for the chance to go 16 points clear at the top of the table, and still with a game in hand over their rivals.

It’s therefore is looking increasingly likely the Reds will end their 30-year wait for a league title this season.

Klopp’s side, who are still unbeaten after 22 league games, are also on course to smash the record for the earliest ever title victory and could beat Manchester City’s previous record points haul of 100 they set two years ago.

In fact, last season saw Liverpool end the campaign with 97 points – the most a team has recorded without winning the title and more than any United team collected in any of their 13 Premier League title wins.

However, Greening is adamant they would not be a match for Fergie’s famous 1998/99 outfit.

“It’s a tough one but I’d have to say the United team,” the former midfielder – an unused substitute in the Champions League final against Bayern Munich – told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast.

“We had the likes of Roy Keane, Paul Scholes, Becks (David Beckham), Giggsy (Ryan Giggs) and the strikers at the time, Teddy [Sheringham], Ole [Gunnar Solskjaer], [Dwight] Yorke, [Andy] Cole, they were just frightening.

Manchester United’s 1999 team are the only side in English football history to win a First Division, FA Cup and European Cup treble

“The biggest problem with the current United team is they are missing leaders like that on the field, Keane, Jaap Stam, Peter Schmeichel, Bryan Robson, that’s what they’re missing at the moment, but there aren’t many players like that around anymore.

“Listen, Liverpool are absolutely flying, they’re so confident, they’ve got an unbelievable spine of the team – Alisson, [Virgil] van Dijk, [Jordan] Henderson and [Roberto] Firmino, and then [Sadio] Mane and [Mohamed] Salah either side of him who are unbelievable and then they’ve got two world class full-backs in [Andy] Robertson and [Trent] Alexander-Arnold.

They’re a scary force at the moment and they seem to be going from strength to strength, so it’s going to be hard to catch them up.”
