Manchester United are ‘not good enough’ and MUST spend this week to save their season – Sam Allardyce defends Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Sam Allardyce has defended under-fire Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and insists he MUST be backed in the transfer market this week to help save Manchester United’s season.

Back-to-back defeats to Liverpool and Burnley has put Solskjaer under pressure, while fan’s anger has been directed at their owners and the lack of investment into their club.

United responded to those defeats by thumping League One Tranmere 6-0 in the FA Cup fourth round, with Harry Maguire and Diogo Dalot bagging their first United goals, Jesse Lingard finally found the net and Phil Jones also scored for the first time in nearly six years.

Anthony Martial also marked his 200th United appearance with a goal before the interval, while Mason Greenwood completed the scoring with a second-half penalty.

But as United ran riot on a patchy Prenton Park pitch, much of the focus was still on their supporters who once again sang out loud and clear against the Glazer family and executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward.

The Red Devils fans who packed the away section urged the Glazers to sell the club and Woodward to leave, but Solskjaer believes any fan dissent can be quelled if United are able to put a winning run together.

However, Sam Allardyce insists that looks highly unlikely with their current squad.

And he believes bringing in better players before the January transfer window shuts on Friday is the only way to save their season and their top-four hopes.

United have been linked with a number of deals as the January window enters its final week, with a transfer for Sporting Lisbon midfielder and ‘the best player in Portugal’ Bruno Fernandes still on the cards, while former Liverpool midfielder Emre Can has also been linked.

Speaking on Monday’s Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, Big Sam said:

“When you sit in the dressing room watching your players and you look in the situation you’re in…

“It’s like me when I take over a club that’s struggling, which has been my forte recently, you look at the players you’ve got available to you and you quickly go to the board and say: ‘These are not good enough. You got to help me and go into the market’.

“Every time I’ve gone into the market to strengthen the team, the team has done better.

“Your job as a manger is to point out the deficiencies of the team and to rectify them and get them better.

“If Ole doesn’t get that support and start buying better players at Manchester United then I’m not so sure that results will improve that much.

“That puts him under threat, and the pressure is mounting on him.

“The manager is taking the can for it at the moment, but really you’re only as good as they players you’ve got.

“And he’s working as hard as he can with what he’s got.”
