‘Coronavirus has caused carnage; it’s inevitable clubs will go out of business’ – Tony Cascarino’s huge COVID-19 warning

Tony Cascarino has issued a dire warning amid the coronavirus pandemic, insisting: ‘It’s inevitable football clubs will go out of business.’

COVID-19 has caused chaos worldwide, with sporting events hit hard by cancellations and postponements.

All professional football in England has been suspended until April 3 at the earliest, while Scotland has called off all football – both professional and grassroots – until further notice.

The impact these postponements will have is a huge unknown.

Never before have we been in this situation, and there is a real chance it will get much worse before it gets better – with many fearing the entire cancellation of the ongoing football season, rather than just delays.

What this would mean in terms of trophies, promotions and relegations remains to be seen, while the financial implications are also expected to be huge.

Premier League clubs may not receive all their expected broadcast income which would cause major issues – but nothing compared to the problems lower league teams will likely face.

They struggle to get by as is – just take a look at the recent Bury and Bolton cases – and removing months worth of gate receipts and revenue will be seriously damaging.

So damaging, in fact, that talkSPORT pundit Tony Cascarino fears it is ‘inevitable’ a number of clubs will go bust and out of business because of the coronavirus pandemic.

“I think what COVID-19 has caused, with the carnage it is and doing right now, you are going to see clubs going out of business,” said the former Chelsea and Republic of Ireland forward.

“That is inevitable further down the pecking order; it is guaranteed.

“There are a number of clubs literally on the brink.

“I would like to think it it a wake-up call… but how long before we all change and go back to the same ways? It’s all pretty inevitable.”
